Tumour Markers
A tumour is not necessarily cancer. Even if it is benign, however, in most cases it must still be removed since it can impinge on the surrounding organs. A malignant tumour is always a case for the surgeons as it can rapidly take on a life of its own. Starting at just a millimetre in size, it needs its own oxygen and nutrient supply. In order to continue to grow, it connects to the bloodstream, enabling it to spread further. That is why early detection is essential.
Parameters like bladder tumour antigen, faecal occult blood or Helicobacter pylori antigens or antibodies can be used to detect the potential presence of tissue changes. Rapid tests are thus an effective means of early detection.
