The NADAL® RSV Test is a lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) antigens in human nasopharyngeal swab specimens. The test is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of RSV infections in patients showing typical symptoms of a respiratory tract infection. The test procedure is not automated and requires no special training or qualification. The NADAL® RSV Test is designed for professional use only.
RSV is the most common respiratory virus in infants and young children. It infects virtually all children by the age of two. In most children, the virus causes symptoms resembling those of the common cold. In infants born prematurely and/or with chronic lung disease, RSV can cause a severe or even lifethreatening disease. Prior to the introduction of Synagis®, RSV disease resulted annually in over 125,000 hospitalisations. There was a high mortality risk amongst approximately 2% of infants. Symptoms of RSV can include fever and a runny nose as well as other, more serious symptoms like coughing, difficult and rapid breathing or wheezing.
