The NADAL® Mycoplasma Test is a dehydrated culture medium-based assay for the screening, identification, enumeration and antibiotic susceptibility testing of Ureaplasma spp. (UU) and Mycoplasma hominis (MH) in human midstream urine and semen specimens, as well as endocervical and urethral swab specimens. UU comprises the biovars of Ureaplasma urealyticum, which were renamed Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum and designated as separate species in 2002. The selection of antibiotics is partially based on CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute) recommendations. The test is designed for professional use only.
Mycoplasma species are pathogens that may cause nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, orchitis, epididymitis etc., which can possibly lead to infertility in both men and women. Mycoplasmae attack and destroy genitourinary epithelial cells, increasing the risk of HIV infection and other sexually-transmitted diseases. Clinical sexually-transmitted diseases can be caused by Mycoplasma (mainly by UU and MH). Their occurrence has been demonstrating an upward-trend. Antibiotic resistance is becoming more and more prevalent due to the misuse of antibiotics, which seriously endanger human health. The key to the treatment and prevention of the spread of Mycoplasma is a timely and accurate diagnosis. Mycoplasma cultivation is currently recognised as a reliable method for diagnosing Mycoplasma infections.
