The NADAL® Malaria Pf/Pan Ag 4 Species Test is a lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay for the simultaneous, qualitative detection and differentiation of HRP II (histidinerich protein II) specific to Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) and pLDH (plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase) specific to Plasmodium species (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale) in human whole blood specimens. The test is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of malaria infection and is designed for professional use only. Any specimen found to be reactive with the NADAL® Malaria Pf/Pan Ag 4 Species Test should be confirmed with a supplementary assay, e. g. the microscopic examination of a thin blood smear.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne, haemolytic, febrile illness. It infects over 200 million people and kills more than 400.000 people annually. Malaria is caused by four species of Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae. All these plasmodia infect and destroy human erythrocytes, causing such symptoms as chills, fever, anaemia and splenomegaly. P. falciparum causes more severe disease than the other Plasmodium species and accounts for most malariarelated deaths. P. falciparum and P. vivax are the most common pathogens; there is, however, a considerable geographic variation in the distribution of Plasmodium species. Traditionally, malaria is diagnosed by the detection of organisms on Giemsa-stained thick smears of peripheral blood, and different Plasmodium species are differentiated by their presence in infected erythrocytes. The technique provides an accurate and reliable diagnosis, but only when performed by skilled microscopists using defined protocols, which presents major hindrances for remote and poor areas of the world. The NADAL® Malaria Pf/Pan Ag 4 Species Test enables the simultaneous, qualitative detection and differentiation of HRP II specific to P. falciparum and/or pLDH produced by all Plasmodium species. The test utilises colloidal gold conjugates to selectively detect HRP II and pLDH in human whole blood samples.
