The NADAL® Calprotectin Test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of calprotectin in human faecal specimens. The test is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders and is designed for professional use only.
Calprotectin is a calcium-binding protein that makes up 5% of the total protein and 60% of the cytosolic protein of neutrophils. It has bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties and is found in faeces at levels six times higher than in plasma. That faecal biomarker is useful for assessing the activity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) and is associated with an elevated number of neutrophils. The NADAL® Calprotectin Test is useful in differentiating organic IBD from functional gastrointestinal disease, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is a simple, non-invasive assay that is especially useful for children, who may require general anesthesia for a colonoscopy. Moreover, this faecal calprotectin detection can be used to predict relapse.
