Product description

The Hepatitis B Virus Surface Antibody Test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of antibodies to Hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) in human whole blood, serum, plasma.

Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure and death. In chronic hepatitis B (CHB), the persistence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is sometimes associated with antibodies (Ab) to HBs (anti-HBs). Presence of hepatitis B surface Ab is an indicator of clinical recovery and subsequent immunity to HBV. This test is useful for evaluation of possible immunity in individuals who are at increased risks for exposure to the HBV, ie., hemodialysis unit personnel, venipuncturists, etc. Also, it is useful for the evaluation of the need for hepatitis B immune globulin after needle stick injury, evaluation of the need for hepatitis B vaccine, and to follow immune status after hepatitis B vaccine. Rapid tests are intended for qualitative detection of HBsAb in human serum, plasma, or whole blood wherever EIA methods are impractical or cannot be sustained. The duration of immunity to HBV from plasma-derived vaccine was generally believed to be around 10 years. Loss of anti-HBs does not necessarily mean loss of immunity, as the immunologic memory induced by the HBV vaccine persists even as anti-HBs decline. Further follow-up is therefore needed to determine if and when booster vaccinations are necessary in the general population.
