In-vitro diagnostics: Medicine's most valuable helper

From the ancient urine examination to the modern urine rapid test for multiple parameters

From antiquity to early modern times, the so-called urine examination, uroscopy, was an essential diagnostic method for physicians. For this purpose, the morning urine was collected in a glass vessel, treated in an elaborate process and finally interpreted in terms of colour, consistency, odour and, more rarely, even taste. Diabetes mellitus (englisch: "honey-sweet flow"), for example, was diagnosed on the basis of the sweetness in the urine.

A rapid test for any case

Today, in-vitro diagnostics give us infinitely more possibilities. They are the most important helpers in medicine. About two thirds of all diagnoses worldwide would be inconceivable without in vitro diagnostics. They form the segment of the global medical technology industry with the highest turnover. Their importance – both for research and for medicine itself – is invaluable. Each of us has come into contact with in-vitro diagnostics at least once in our lives. A pregnancy test, the coronary test, the determination of blood sugar levels, alcohol and drug tests, the determination of emergency parameters that can tell within a few minutes whether someone is having a heart attack or a pulmonary embolism – in-vitro diagnostics are ubiquitous and, in an emergency, lifesavers.
