Methamphetamine belongs to the group of psychostimulants and, as such, increases the activity of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Due to the crystalline structure of methamphetamine hydrochloride salt, it has established common names such as "Crystal Meth" or "Ice" for the drug. While it was taken orally as Pervitin (known as "tank chocolate") during World War II, methamphetamine is now mostly consumed nasally or smoked, resulting in a much faster and more intense onset of effects.
