It is difficult to identify individual benzodiazepines among the numerous representatives in this substance group. Therefore, most commercially available benzodiazepine tests are group tests. They aim to detect not only a specific substance very selectively but also to capture as many benzodiazepines as possible. The detection is based on antigen-antibody interactions calibrated with a reference substance. The cross-reactivity of the antibody, which is usually viewed critically, is beneficial here. The individual benzodiazepines are recognized better by the test the more their structure resembles the reference substance. The detection limits can vary significantly. It is possible that a benzodiazepine is detected by the rapid test, but only at a concentration that is not expected in physiological samples. Therefore, it can be helpful to use a highly sensitive test. Higher sensitivity will also facilitate the detection of less reactive preparations that cannot be adequately detected with the standard cut-off.
