The individually packaged test cassettes are used for the detection of methamphetamine. The present test yields a positive result from a cut-off of 50 ng/mL.
Compared to test strips, the test cassette requires only a few drops of blood to provide a reliable result. Test cassettes are also suitable for use in the laboratory, as they can be conveniently integrated into the workflow.
Methamphetamine belongs to the group of psychostimulants and as such, it increases the activity of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Due to the crystalline structure of methamphetamine hydrochloride salt, catchy names such as "Crystal Meth" or "Ice" have become established for the drug. While during World War II it was taken orally as Pervitin (known as "tank chocolate"), methamphetamine is now mostly consumed nasally or smoked, leading to a significantly faster and more intense onset of the effect. As the 2014 Addiction Report of the Federal Government states, the spread of Crystal Meth remains at a worrying level, as in the previous years. In 2018 alone, 16 tons of the highly effective amphetamine were illegally produced in the Czech Republic.
