The individually packaged test cassettes are used to detect ketamine. The present test shows a positive result from a cut-off of 50 ng/mL.
Compared to test strips, the test cassette requires only a few drops of blood to provide a reliable result. Test cassettes are also suitable for use in the laboratory, as they can be easily integrated into the workflow.
During the Vietnam War, ketamine became the most commonly used anesthetic in the US Army. Nowadays, it is mostly used in its liquid form in veterinary and emergency medicine. However, the psychotic-like effects of ketamine also increased its popularity as a recreational drug outside of a medical setting. In the 1990s, reports first emerged that the substance was appearing in ecstasy tablets in the techno scene. However, ketamine increases heart rate, which means that mixing it with stimulants can be dangerous. Ketamine can also be snorted or inhaled in its crystalline form. Injection of liquid ketamine has also been reported. Testing for ketamine is recommended, especially in combination with parameters from the field of synthetic party drugs.
