The individually packaged test cassettes are used to detect Benzodiazepines. This test gives a positive result at a cut-off of 100 ng/mL.
Compared to test strips, the test cassette requires only a few drops of blood to give a reliable result. Test cassettes are also suitable for use in the laboratory as they can be conveniently integrated into the workflow.
Benzodiazepines are pharmacologically similar to barbiturates. However, they are less toxic and have replaced barbiturates in the treatment of sleep disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, and preparation for anesthesia. Like barbiturates, "Benzos" - as they are colloquially known - can lead to severe addiction. Benzodiazepines are therefore particularly relevant for drug users with a high-risk consumption pattern. Not least because of this, benzodiazepines have been mentioned in the same breath as illegal drugs for years and are included in multi-drug screening. However, with numerous representatives within this group, it is difficult to identify individual benzodiazepines. This is also always dependent on the substance sought and the amount consumed. Most commercially available benzodiazepine tests are so-called group tests. The aim of such tests is not only to detect a specific substance very selectively but also to detect as many benzodiazepines as possible. The detection is based - as with most rapid drug tests - on antigen-antibody interactions with a leading substance, on whose detection the test is calibrated. The cross-reactivity of the antibody, which is otherwise viewed rather critically, is useful here. The individual benzodiazepines are recognized better by the test, the more their structure resembles that of the leading substance. The detection limits can therefore vary significantly. It may therefore be helpful to use a test that is as sensitive as possible. Because higher sensitivity also favors the detection of weaker-reacting preparations that cannot be adequately detected with the standard cut-off.
