The individually packaged test cassettes are used for the detection of barbiturates. The present test produces a positive result from a cut-off of 100 ng/mL.
Compared to test strips, the test cassette requires only a few drops of blood to display a reliable result. Test cassettes are also suitable for use in laboratories, as they can be easily integrated into the workflow.
Drugs containing barbiturate derivatives are supposed to work on the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Barbiturates have sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects. Depending on the type, the duration of action is short, medium, or long. Regarding their pharmacological effects, barbiturates are similar to benzodiazepines, from which they were eventually replaced as sleep and sedative medications, as benzodiazepines are less likely to alter natural sleep patterns, are better tolerated, and less dangerous. An overdose of barbiturates can lead to respiratory depression, bradycardia, shock-like states, deep unconsciousness, hypotension, and ultimately death.
