The AFIAS Testosterone Test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of testosterone in human serum or plasma. The test serves as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of testosterone levels. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Testosterone (17β-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one) is an androgen synthesised mainly in Leydig cells in the male testes, the female ovaries and the adrenal glands of both sexes. It is synthesised from cholesterol, with androstenediol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), progesterone and pregnenolone, among others, being important intermediates. Male testosterone levels increase 10- to 20-fold during puberty, driving physiological changes during male puberty. It also has a strong, far-reaching influence on emotional well-being, sexual function, muscle mass and strength, energy balance, cardiovascular health, bone strength and cognitive abilities throughout a man's life. In the blood, only 1 to 15% of testosterone is in the unbound or biologically active form. The rest of the testosterone is bound to serum proteins.
