The AFIAS PCT test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of procalcitonin (PCT) in human whole blood/serum/plasma. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of bacterial infections and sepsis. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
The detection of sepsis is a daily challenge in the intensive care unit of any hospital. Early assessment of sepsis is critical in determining appropriate treatment, as different therapeutic strategies are known to improve survival of patients with sepsis. In healthy people, the concentration of plasma PCT is below 0.1 ng/mL. PCT levels rise rapidly after a bacterial infection with systemic consequences. It may also be elevated by other causes such as major surgery, severe burns or in newborns, but in these cases it quickly returns to baseline. Viral infections, bacterial infestations, local infections, allergic diseases, autoimmune diseases and transplant rejection do not normally have a significant effect on PCT levels.
