The AFIAS NT-proBNP test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of NT-proBNP in human whole blood/serum/plasma. The test is used as an aid in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
N-terminal pro-natriuretic type B peptide (NT-proBNP) is produced predominantly by cardiac-specific ventricular myocytes, released in response to myocardial stress and filling pressure, and is involved in maintaining intravascular volume balance (homeostasis). After stimulation of cardiac myocytes, natriuretic peptides are produced as prohormones (proBNP) and cleaved into two fragments that are released into the bloodstream as the 32 amino acid long active BNP and the N-terminal fragment of 76 amino acids (NT-proBNP). NT-proBNP immunoassays are widely used, considered a useful marker and have high diagnostic accuracy in clinical practice and cardiovascular research as a diagnostic tool for the occurrence and severity of heart failure (HI). Therefore, NT-proBNP measurements in human blood are useful not only for the diagnosis of heart disease, but also for the evaluation of patients with suspected HI and for assessing the severity of the disease.
