The AFIAS Microalbumin Test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of microalbumin in human urine. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of renal damage due to diabetes mellitus. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
A microalbumin test examines urine for the presence of the protein albumin. Albumin is usually found in the blood and filtered by the kidneys. If the kidneys are working properly, albumin is not present in the urine. However, if the kidneys are damaged, small amounts of albumin are found in the urine. This albumin is called microalbumin. Microalbumin is most often produced when the kidneys are damaged due to diabetes. However, other diseases also lead to kidney damage, such as high blood pressure, heart failure, cirrhosis or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). If the kidney damage is not treated early, larger amounts of albumin and protein end up in the urine. This condition is called macroalbuminuria or proteinuria. If the kidneys release protein, this can be an indication of severe kidney damage and lead to chronic kidney disease. A microalbumin urine test can be done with a urine sample collected randomly (usually after the first morning urine), over 24 hours, or over a specific period of time (such as over 4 hours or overnight).
