The AFIAS LH test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of luteinising hormone (LH) in human whole blood, serum or plasma. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of fertility problems, the function of the reproductive organs (testes or ovaries) or for ovulation determination. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Luteinising hormone (LH) is produced in both men and women in the anterior pituitary gland in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) released by the hypothalamus. LH, also called interstitial cell stimulating hormone (ICSH) in men, is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of about 30,000 Da. In women, LH regulates the menstrual cycle and ovulation. The level of LH in the female body varies with the phases of the menstrual cycle. Just before ovulation, around the middle of the cycle (day 14 of a 28-day cycle), it rises rapidly; this is called the LH surge during the monthly menstrual cycle. In men, LH stimulates the production of testosterone, which plays a role in sperm maturation.
