The AFIAS HbA1c test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of HbA1c (haemoglobin A1c) in human whole blood. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of long-term blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Glycated protein is formed post-translationally by the slow, non-enzymatic reaction between glucose and amino groups on proteins. HbA1c is a clinically useful index of mean blood glucose levels over the past 120 days, the average life span of erythrocytes. Carefully controlled studies have documented a close relationship between concentrations of HbA1c and mean blood glucose levels. HbA1c is considered the more reliable parameter in monitoring blood glucose levels than measuring blood glucose levels by conventional glucose meter.
