The AFIAS Ferritin Test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of ferritin in human serum/plasma. The test serves as an aid for the quantification of human ferritin. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Ferritin, an important protein for iron storage, is essential for iron homeostasis and involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Ferritin makes iron available for important cellular processes and at the same time protects lipids, DNA and proteins from possible toxic effects of iron. In clinical medicine, ferritin is predominantly used as a marker for total iron stored in the body. Serum ferritin plays a crucial role in both the diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency and excess. Ferritin levels that are below the reference range are a sign of iron deficiency in the body. Recent studies show that ferritin allows more sensitive, specific and reliable measurements for determining iron deficiency at an early stage. On the other hand, ferritin levels above the reference range in patients may indicate iron excess, infection, inflammation, collagen, liver and neoplastic diseases, and chronic kidney failure.
