The AFIAS Cortisol Test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of cortisol in human whole blood, serum or plasma. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of cortisol levels. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Cortisol is a potent hormone of the glucocorticoid group that affects the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in general, but glucose metabolism in particular. Cortisol measurement is mainly carried out in patients whose adrenal function is disturbed. The cortisol level is subject to typical fluctuations during the course of the day. It has its highest value between 6 and 8 a.m., then gradually falls and reaches its lowest value around midnight. For cortisol measurement, blood samples are therefore usually collected at eight in the morning and again at four in the afternoon. It should be noted that normal values should be adjusted for people who work at night for a long period of time and sleep during the day.
