The AFIAS AFP test is a fluorescence immunoassay (FIA) for the quantitative determination of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in human whole blood, serum or plasma. The test is used as an aid in the treatment and monitoring of primary hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminomatous testicular tumour. For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) belongs to the α1-globulin family of human plasma proteins and is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa. It is predominantly produced in the foetal liver during embryonic development. Accordingly, AFP can be detected in maternal blood and amniotic fluid as it is released into the fetal serum. In various malignancies, mostly primary hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminomatous testicular tumour, there is a sharp increase in AFP concentration. 70-90% of all patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma and non-seminomatous testicular tumours have high AFP levels. High AFP levels have also been found in a limited number of patients diagnosed with various diseases such as gastrointestinal cancer, viral hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, alcohol-related cirrhosis and adenocarcinomas of the lung, pancreas and gallbladder. As AFP is recognised as an important prognostic marker in non-seminomatous testicular tumours, it plays a crucial role in monitoring clinical status in post-treatment and post-therapeutic assessment of patients.
